A flow straightener, also known as a “calming baffle”, is a specific type of perforated plate commonly used to prevent and eliminate flow turbulence inside vessels and to introduce the two-phase liquid flow into the settling compartment under laminar flow conditions, as illustrated in the diagram below.

Straightening the flow is highly beneficial because it improves the separation efficiency of the vane pack installed downstream of the plate. When the liquid enters the vane pack with a uniform distribution and velocity profile, the separation process can begin immediately. Conversely, without a flow straightener, the liquid distribution can be highly irregular, compromising the performance of the downstream vane pack.

In some cases, a double flow straightener can be used, usually consisting of two different perforated plates installed in series. This configuration significantly increases the calming effect on the flow, but requires more space and is more costly.
